The events were organised by Future Sales Factory and held in the training and development resource centre of Edinburgh-based recruitment firm Bright Purple Resourcing.&#160;<br /></div> <div> <div>"I saw a red flash and turned my head away from the light and then woke seven metres from where I&#8217;d been standing," said Jaco. &#8220;" instinctively sat up and reached for my rifle but I couldn&#8217;t hold it properly. I looked down and realised that I&#8217;d lost my arm." Jaco had been hit by a rocket propelled grenade, severing his left arm and inflicting severe injuries throughout his entire body.</div> </div> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> </div> <div> <div>"One of my colleagues performed life-saving first aid treatment and I was airlifted by helicopter before becoming unconscious. Seven days later I woke up with my family around my bed, thinking 'what are they doing in Afghanistan?'"&#160;</div> <div>In fact, they were at his bedside in Birmingham where Jaco had been flown for emergency treatment.&#160;</div> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> </div> <div> <div>Through intense rehab and determination Jaco overcame the severe trauma of his injuries but had to face the fact that his life would never be the same. "I was discharged from the army and I thought 'what am I going to do with my life?' All I wanted to do was return to Afghanistan and continue as a soldier but that was no longer possible."</div> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> </div> <div> <div>Instead Jaco opted to focus his attention on new challenges. He learned how to ski and went on to represent the army in the Combined Services Disabled Ski Team. He also began running marathons and has now completed several all over the world, raising money for various charities. In 2011 he was part of a team disabled soldiers, accompanied for five days by HRH Prince Harry, which trekked unsupported to the Geographical North Pole. In the process the group raised &#163;1.5 million for Walking With the Wounded, a charity which re-trains and re-educates injured soldiers when they leave the armed forces. Last summer Jaco was also selected to be one of the Olympic flame torch-bearers in advance of the games coming to London. "It was such an honour for me. I carried that torch on behalf of all my wounded armed forces colleagues and those who weren't as fortunate as me and never made it home alive," he said.</div> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> </div> <div> <div>Jaco has now set his sights on new challenges. He will be setting off in May to climb Mount McKinley, the highest peak in North America, part of the seven peaks challenge to climb the highest mountain on every continent.&#160;</div> </div> <div> </div> <div> </div> <div> </div> <div>&#160;<br /><div>He is also preparing another fund-raising challenge for Help for Heroes: flying a microlight across Antarctica to the South Pole, a feat which has never been attempted before by anyone, able-bodied or otherwise.<br /><br /><div>Jaco's address at the Bright Purple Academy was attended by a group of young people who are involved with a range of organisations including the British Army, Inspiring Scotland, Limelight Careers, Youthbuild, Napier University and Aberdeen University.</div><div>&#160;&#160;</div><div>20 year old Robert, who is currently being mentored by the organisation Youth Build, was one of those who attended the event. "I was especially taken with the quote that Jaco shared with us: 'life is 10 per cent what happens to you and 90 per cent of how you respond to it.' I was really impressed and uplifted by all he has achieved so far," he said.</div><div>Alistair, a youth who is currently involved in an employment training programme with Inspiring Scotland was equally impressed. "It was a really great talk, hearing of his north pole expedition. It shows you that there really are no boundaries."</div><div></div><div>Sarah, a fourth year law student at Aberdeen University who made the trek to Edinburgh to hear Jaco's story, said: "I was really encouraged in how he has confronted barriers in life and has succeeded when people told him that what he wanted to do couldn&#8217;t be done." &#160;His talk makes you question life changing events and how you deal with them. It also highlights to me the importance of challenging yourself, both inside and outside of your career."</div><div>&#160;</div><div>Brody, an 18 year old who is now on a Limelight Careers-supported apprenticeship with the Registrars of Scotland, said: "Jaco's story is just unbelievable. Young people are often told what we can't do but he has shown what can be achieved."&#160;</div><div>Jaco was welcomed by Bright Purple CEO, Nick Price. He said: "Jaco van Gass is an extremely uplifting individual who, on the back of an absolutely devastating personal incident, has literally picked himself up and gone on to some amazing achievements. It's been a delight having him here in Edinburgh to share his fascinating life story, so far. He has shown us that whatever circumstances we are facing it is possible to find strength and depth to do great things."</div><div></div><div>The events were organised by Edinburgh-based consultancy Future Sales Factory. The company's managing director, Matthew Quinn, said: "Given his own personal qualities as well as the fascinating and uplifting story he has to share, Jaco is becoming an increasingly sought after speaker throughout the UK. As he has demonstrated with the events at Bright Purple, his appeal stretches to audiences of all ages and background. He is quite simply a remarkable man who delivers a captivating and inspiring message."&#160;</div></div></div> <div> </div> <div> </div> Mon, 29 Apr 2013 11:53:27SuperUser AccountMon, 29 Apr 2013 11:41:35Sun, 29 Apr 2018 11:41:35http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/CommunityNews/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Jaco+Captivates+and+Inspires+Audience+at+Bright+Purple+Academy 100http://www.brightpurple.co.uk//Portals/0//jaco.jpgInspirational van Gass to Address Inspiring Youth Eventhttp://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/CommunityNews/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Inspirational+van+Gass+to+Address+Inspiring+Youth+Event 99Charity fund-raiser and British Army veteran, Jaco van Gass, will address an audience of young Scots on 25 April where he will share an inspirational story about rebuilding his life after incurring devastating war injuries.Wed, 20 Mar 2013 10:14:35 GMTInspirational van Gass to Address Inspiring Youth EventCharity fund-raiser and British Army veteran, Jaco van Gass, will address an audience of young Scots on 25 April where he will share an inspirational story about rebuilding his life after incurring devastating war injuries. <img style="float:right;margin: 0 0 10px 10px;" src="/Portals/0/walker.jpg" alt="" width="400px" /> <div> </div> <div> </div> <div> </div> <div>South African born van Gass will speak at the Bright Purple Academy, the training and development resource centre of Edinburgh-based recruitment firm Bright Purple Resourcing, where he will recount his experience in the Afghanistan war where he was hit by a rocket propelled grenade, losing his left arm and sustaining severe injuries throughout his entire body.</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> </div> <div>Through intense rehab and determination Jaco has overcome adversity and taken on the world. We were paired with Tynecastle High School and Diana Plesniak (HR) and I were chosen by Nick to act as mentors and to represent Bright Purple. I was thrilled to have been given this opportunity although I was also a little apprehensive, as there were some very senior professionals mentoring from other companies and I was worried I wouldn&#8217;t match up to expectations. Diana and I were assured that as we were closer in age and also not too far up the career ladder, that it would be easier for the young people to relate to us.<br /><br /> I was paired with David McFarlane. He is 16 years old and is currently studying for his intermediate 2&#8217;s, and also one higher. I have met up with David 3 times so far &#8211; once a month since the beginning of the year and we have been getting on very well. During the first meeting, I wanted to form an idea about what David wanted to get out of the programme, what he hoped to learn from me, and what kind of things he would like help with, and this helped me plan our meetings. I also explained my role within the business. <br /><br /> Our second meeting saw David visit while our four new Lithuanian colleagues were in Edinburgh as they were over for the week receiving training and also meeting all the Scottish based Bright Purple People. They had been asked to prepare a presentation about their visit to Edinburgh and what they had learnt from our culture. I brought David along to this presentation to give him a feel of what it felt like to work at Bright Purple and also to learn more about the business. He really enjoyed it! And he said he was delighted to have been given the opportunity, as he was able to learn about the business from the perspective of new employees and learnt things about recruitment which he hadn&#8217;t known before. Our CEO Nick Price even gave him a question to ask the girls, which although he said was daunting, he felt included and part of the team. I was really pleased with that, as he sat smiling amongst 40 experienced people and yet feeling involved. David also asked that I helped him to draft a CV, so I gave him some headings and asked him to fill these in for our next meeting. I also gave him a copy of my CV as an example, so he could have a look at the layout and also he would see examples of possible things to write. <br /><br /> For our third meeting I arranged for David to shadow Tracey Murray, a consultant here at Bright Purple. David had expressed interest in finding out more about the sales side of the business after attending the presentation on our second meeting. I sat down with Tracey and discussed questions that she could answer for David, and things she could show him and demonstrate for him to ensure he got a real flavour for her role within Bright Purple. He loved this and Tracey gave me great feedback on their time together. A few other consultants who sat by Tracey also commented that David was very clever and showed real interest, by asking some great questions throughout the shadowing. <br /><br /> I typed up the questions and answers I had discussed with Tracey, adding any extra information that was covered during the shadowing and gave this to David to take away so he could refer back to it. I also helped him fill in his application form for his summer internship which he is very excited about and not least because he gets paid for it as well as getting some real hands on experience in the workplace. <br /><br /> So far I have found the experience personally very rewarding. David is full of energy and very keen to learn and we are able to talk openly about how he is getting on at school with his exams, and studying, and about what he wants to learn from this opportunity. It feels good to know that I am helping to make a small difference to his experiences with the Career Academies UK and I love how much he has learnt from his experiences here so far. <br /><br /> Nick Price, CEO added to Megan&#8217;s views. &#8220;Bright Purple is honoured to continue its commitment to helping its community and especially when it comes to young people, the future of our economy. I think exposing both Megan and Diana to this project will also help them grow as individuals and hopefully we will be able to follow this up again, giving other Bright Purple People a chance. Megan has a great personality, always smiling and she&#8217;s got the banter, so I am sure David hasn&#8217;t had a quiet moment to himself! I have met David and I have to say, although he is only 16 years old, he himself has a great personality and a desire to learn, so I am sure he&#8217;ll do well in life. Good luck David from all at Bright Purple.&#8221;</div> <div> <div align="center"> </div> </div> Wed, 16 May 2012 09:15:07SuperUser AccountWed, 16 May 2012 09:04:47Tue, 16 May 2017 09:04:47http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/CommunityNews/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Youth+mentoring+youth++a+marriage+made+in+heaven 91http://www.brightpurple.co.uk//Portals/0//4.jpgBright Purple Paps Walking to raise money for Breast Cancer in Edinburgh Moonwalkhttp://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/CommunityNews/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Bright+Purple+Paps+Walking+to+raise+money+for+Breast+Cancer+in+Edinburgh+Moonwalk 89Bright Purple Paps will again take part in the Edinburgh Moonwalk, this year with a team of eight walking the 26.2 miles throughout the night to raise money for Breast Cancer.Wed, 04 Apr 2012 15:06:49 GMTBright Purple Paps Walking to raise money for Breast Cancer in Edinburgh MoonwalkBright Purple Paps will again take part in the Edinburgh Moonwalk, this year with a team of eight walking the 26.2 miles throughout the night to raise money for Breast Cancer. <img style="border-bottom-color: #c0c0c0; border-top-color: #c0c0c0; border-right-color: #c0c0c0; border-left-color: #c0c0c0;margin-top:15px;" border="0" alt="Bright Purple Wins Award" align="right" src="/Portals/0/group.jpg" /> <br /> <br /> Hoping to beat their time of last year of seven hours, the Paps have already started their training routine with Jemma Moss walking the six mile journey home a few nights a week to help increase her stamina and fitness levels. This included a detailed analysis of what we, as recruiters, look for when a conducting interviews. It was a mixture of their knowledge and life experiences which portrayed the relevant information in a way in which the pupils could understand and relate to.</p> <p>We also touched on the subject of networking and explained how social media can be used to the students&#8217; advantage. This included all forms of social media and outlined why it is important to connect with the right people who would be able to help them now and in the future. Dawn Dickson, Employment Law Partner at Lindsays Solicitors, then went on to describe her experience of networking including social events and business lunches and provided a great insight into how to conduct yourself and make the most out of the situation.</p> <p>Kevin and Alex used a mixture of hand-outs, role play and PowerPoint slides to convey the information they had put together during the week. The pupils&#8217; feedback was very positive, saying they particularly enjoyed the interactive aspect of the presentation.</p> Tue, 27 Mar 2012 13:16:16SuperUser AccountTue, 27 Mar 2012 13:08:33Mon, 27 Mar 2017 13:08:33http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/CommunityNews/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Bright+Purple+takes+part+in+guru+lecture 88http://www.brightpurple.co.uk//Portals/0//comm.jpgPurple Power deployed to raise funds for Byte Night 2011http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/CommunityNews/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Purple+Power+deployed+to+raise+funds+for+Byte+Night+2011 76A team of five will brave the elements to represent Bright Purple Resourcing at this year’s fund-raising Byte Night 2011 event in Edinburgh with all proceeds benefitting the charity Action for Children.Fri, 09 Sep 2011 13:33:42 GMTPurple Power deployed to raise funds for Byte Night 2011A team of five will brave the elements to represent Bright Purple Resourcing at this year’s fund-raising Byte Night 2011 event in Edinburgh with all proceeds benefitting the charity Action for Children. <p> <img style="border-bottom-color: #c0c0c0; border-top-color: #c0c0c0; border-right-color: #c0c0c0; border-left-color: #c0c0c0" border="0" alt="Action for Children Supporter - Bright Purple" align="right" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Action-For-Children---Bright-Purple.png" width="110" height="158" /> <img border="0" alt="Byte Night 2011 - Bright Purple" vspace="15" align="right" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Byte-Night-2011---Bright-Purple.png" width="200" height="118" />With over 700 people from the IT and business community taking part, Byte Night is once again being staged to raise money to tackle root causes of youth homelessness. I think of all the great times we have had as a company and the fun nights out as a group, but I can honestly say I have never seen us laugh so much together.&#8217;</p> <p>He continued, &#8216;Have you ever tried to kick a ball when you can&#8217;t actually get your feet out of the mud? We taped our boots to our feet as instructed and we wore our brand new Purple Power Rangers T-Shirts with pride, but two minutes in to the first game and we could have been wearing anything because you would have never known &#8211; we were covered in mud.&#8217;</p> <p>&#8216;There were rules, but it seemed that most teams decided the best ploy was to just get stuck in and our two ladies Marielle and Jemma certainly did that in the big games. It&#8217;s a great event, which has raised over &#163;12m to date for cancer charities throughout Scotland.<br /><br /> &#8220;We would urge more companies to take part because it&#8217;s all for an excellent cause. We have also found it a great way of building team spirit, something you certainly need to complete a 26 mile walk in the middle of the night.&#8221;<br /><br /> Some of the charities benefitting from Edinburgh MoonWalk grants include Maggie&#8217;s Care Centre Glasgow, Breast Cancer Institute Edinburgh, and the Breast Cancer Campaign Dundee. <br /><br /> Nina Barough, the Founder and Chief Executive of the Walk the Walk the charity behind The MoonWalk said: &#8220;We appreciate the effort from companies like Bright Purple and the thousands of individuals who take part in The MoonWalk Edinburgh each year. It&#8217;s a great challenge which enables women and men to get themselves fitter and, in the process, help the lives of so many going through cancer treatment.<br /><br /> &#8220;I would encourage Scottish companies to support the event and put together a team for the Half Moon which is still open to entries. This is a great way to introduce themselves to The MoonWalk and help us to continue to raise millions to improve the lives of cancer patients in Scotland.&#8221;Thu, 21 Apr 2011 09:02:00SuperUser AccountThu, 21 Apr 2011 08:59:08Thu, 21 Apr 2016 08:59:08http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/CommunityNews/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Bright+Purple+leads+call+for+business+to+support+2011++Edinburgh+MoonWalk 64http://www.brightpurple.co.uk//Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Edinburgh-MoonWalk-2011.jpgBright Purple Paps to do 2011 Edinburgh Moonwalkhttp://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/CommunityNews/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Bright+Purple+Paps+to+do+2011+Edinburgh+Moonwalk 62Bright Purple will once again be doing their bit to raise money for Breast Cancer causes in Scotland by participating in Walk the Walk 2011...Wed, 02 Mar 2011 15:29:23 GMTBright Purple Paps to do 2011 Edinburgh MoonwalkBright Purple will once again be doing their bit to raise money for Breast Cancer causes in Scotland by participating in Walk the Walk 2011... <p>All the pain is now forgotten (well&#160;it's not&#160;talked about much for fear of bringing back the nightmares) but all of the fun and satisfaction of a great night in 2010 is remembered.</p> <p>So now the Bright Purple Paps are reunited and have decided to brave The Walk this year again.&#160;The original crew &#8211; Jan, Nick and Judit (minus Dee) has been joined by Marielle, Monica, Isabel, Amy and Sandra &#8211; still searching for some guys to join Nick! The blackness of Arthur's Seat allowed us a view of the stars glittering above; a good sign for the morning that was to come and sure enough by the half way point, the sun was rising over the Firth of Forth.&#160; With about 9 miles to go, the pain was starting to kick in for most of the team, although we were not alone, passing many casualties along the way.&#160; Of course we would have been considerably faster if our ladies didn&#8217;t need the loo so often, because if the queue for the ladies is always bad wherever you go, add 9,000 women to that figure and try and fit them in a small amount of portaloos &#8211; it&#8217;s a disaster waiting to happen! </p> <p>By the time we reached Portobello we were hanging in there, the banter had long stopped and everyone quietly focused on finishing the job and getting to the end. We walked in to Inverleith Park in brilliant sunshine, cheered on by the crowds of people welcoming their friends and family home, that's was a very nice feeling and pretty emotional for us all, as we remembered why we were doing this and our own loved ones who suffered or were suffering this terrible disease.</p> <p>However it must give sufferers of breast cancer around the UK, great satisfaction to know that over 10,000 people in Edinburgh cared enough about their situation to walk 26.2 miles through Edinburgh and beyond, to help raise money for their great cause. We are already talking about next year and you&#8217;ll see the Pap&#8217;s once again treading the streets of Edinburgh that&#8217;s for sure."</p> <div> <strong>Judit Czobor, Bright Purple&#8217;s PES Administrator talks about her experience of the walk:</strong> <div>&#160;</div> <img style="border-bottom-color: #ffffff; border-top-color: #ffffff; border-right-color: #ffffff; border-left-color: #ffffff" border="4" alt="Mile 26 - Edinburgh Moonwalk 2010" align="left" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Mile-26.png" width="200" height="310" />&#8220;Mission accomplished!&#160; We all managed the whole 26.2 miles on Saturday night, though I personally had some doubts about myself on Saturday afternoon, having had 10 days off in roasting Hungary, spent mainly having fun with friends. It was probably not on the training plan we had received from the organisers?&#160; I did manage to do some walking whilst there, but it&#8217;s a bit different when it&#8217;s 30-35C in non-existent shade.&#160; Having done long distance walks in Spain I was mainly afraid of the weather and also of falling asleep.&#160; Luck was on our side regarding the weather and we made sure we kept each other awake, especially during the first half of the walk.&#160; Reaching 13 miles we had a lively conversation about the wonders of a nice hot bath and as everyone fell silent, I assumed it was not only me who was now dreaming about it.&#160; </div> <p>The worst parts of the walk were the toilet stops, because I had trouble getting my feet started again after being rested.&#160; Nick, although married, seemed to have absolutely no understanding of the hardship of being a woman and having to queue for ages for a portaloo! </p> <p>However once we started walking again, he was determined that we would overtake everyone who had passed us.&#160; I must admit at that moment he was not my most favourite person in Portobello as we strode along the beach prom and headed for home, though in hindsight I am rather thankful for Nick pushing us on; otherwise I could have simply given up or popped home, as we passed my flat on the route to the finish line.</p> <div>Arriving back to the Moonwalk Village people were cheering, it was emotional, but I managed it with dry eyes this time.&#160; It would be wonderful if our, in comparison ridiculously tiny sufferings of sore feet, could distract the pain and give a bit relief for the sufferers of breast cancer.&#8221;<br /></div> <div>Thank you to all followers of the Bright Purple Pap's, your financial donations were gratefully received and we'll keep our page open to allow people a chance to continue donating - we are considering a wee 'after-party' to raise even more money and to celebrate the success of the walk - we'll be in touch<br /><a href="http://www.walkthewalkfundraising.org/brightpurplepaps">http://www.walkthewalkfundraising.org/brightpurplepaps</a></div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="The Bright Purple Paps" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/The-Team.png" width="385" height="206" /> </div> </div> Fri, 25 Jun 2010 10:54:36Andrew SteelSat, 19 Jun 2010 10:40:13Thu, 25 Jun 2015 10:40:13http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/CommunityNews/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Bright+Purple+Paps+do+the+Edinburgh+Moonwalk 52Bright Purple Compete in the ScotlandIS Football Tournamenthttp://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/CommunityNews/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Bright+Purple+Compete+in+the+ScotlandIS+Football+Tournament 48On Friday 21st May, ScotlandIS held their 5-a-side football tournament at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh and Bright Purple’s team headed along to compete.Fri, 21 May 2010 11:16:52 GMTBright Purple Compete in the ScotlandIS Football TournamentOn Friday 21st May, ScotlandIS held their 5-a-side football tournament at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh and Bright Purple’s team headed along to compete. <p>&#160;</p> <div>Teams from Peach Digital, Amor Group, Lumison, ScottishPower, Bright Purple, ScotlandIS, RBS, Conscia, Radiator and 9-20 Recruitment, took part in group stages.&#160; Unfortunately after all their hard efforts Bright Purple were put out before the semi finals. </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>The semi finals featured 9-20 Recruitment, along with last year's winners, ScottishPower, with the teams from ScotlandIS and RBS proving to be serious challengers.&#160; &#160;</div> <div>&#160;</div> After a hard-fought final, ScotlandIS secured a 3-1 victory over tournament favourites ScottishPower to win the 2010 ScotlandIS 5-a-side football trophy.<br /><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center"><img alt="Bright Purple 5 aside team" src="/Portals/0/Images/BrightPurpleFootballTeam.jpg" width="400" height="225" />&#160;</div>Thu, 03 Jun 2010 11:34:04SuperUser AccountFri, 21 May 2010 11:16:52Wed, 03 Jun 2015 11:16:52http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/CommunityNews/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Bright+Purple+Compete+in+the+ScotlandIS+Football+Tournament 48http://www.brightpurple.co.uk//Portals/0/Documents/ScotlandISlogoThumb.jpgBright Purple Join Bike2Work Schemehttp://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/CommunityNews/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Bright+Purple+Join+Bike2Work+Scheme 42Bright Purple is now involved in the Bike to Work scheme which allows employees to save up to 50% on bicycles and equipment. Anyone who thinks that people living on the street might be "<em>at it</em>" in certain cases (I was one who might of pre-judged from time to time), should try a Byte Night out!<br /> &#160;<br /> Total respect from my team to anyone forced to live on the streets of the UK, young or old, because this one night turned into one of the hardest experiences of my life to date - in fact harder than the 4 days I spent at altitude walking 4 Alpine glaciers - hand on heart!<br /><br /><strong>And So It Begins!<br /></strong><br /> After a bowl of warm chilli, we&#160;ventured out of the <strong>Scottish Parliament</strong> around 10pm to take up our places in <strong>Holyrood Park in Edinburgh</strong>, only to be met by rain and wind as soon as we stepped out of the door - great start. After some banter and an auction inside a small marquee, during which&#160;we met the <strong>beautiful STV weather girl Jean Johansson</strong>, it was out in to the field of battle. Off we trudged miserably with our ground sheets and sleeping bags in hand and of course the most essential item, our orange survival bags. Over 100 hardy souls decided to take up the challenge in Edinburgh, how many in the South I wonder, hundreds?<br /><br /></div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple Byte Night - Nick Price and STV Weathergirl Jean Johansson" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Nick and STV weather girl Jean Johansson.jpg" width="405" height="246" /> <div>Nick with STV weathergirl Jean Johansson</div> </div> <div> <br /> Spirits were high amongst the&#160;<strong style="color: #800080"><a href="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk"><strong style="color: #800080">Bright Purple</strong></a> Noses</strong> (our team name!), but maybe that was because the spirits that were drunk to battle the cold were taking affect? Everyone was suitably relaxed and&#160;the patter was good&#160;and then the wind started to drive in and it was only midnight. Dee decided to sing, it started with<strong> 'Stary Stary Night'</strong> and actually it was the same song for an hour -&#160; she can be really annoying (but a real star at the same time)! The rain started to fall even heavier and we tried to jockey for positions on the groundsheet - old boy Nick, wisest of the crew, found his strategy had worked and found the middle of the sheet, flanked by Ryan and Claire - natural wind and rain breakers! Mike was snuggled up, cozy in his bag and with his Rick Astley haircut still intact! Dee, well she was still wandering around in her own little world, still singing and annoying everyone who was trying to get what little sleep they could.<br /><br /><strong>3am</strong><br /><br /> We were hit by absolutely driving, torrential rain and the wind was whistling through our flimsy survival bags. Dee told us she needed the bathroom 'again' and Ryan still suffering from jet lag, having just returned from a wedding in Chicago, was trying to keep his eyes shut. However Dee, who decided against sleeping in her sleeping bag, wanted to cuddle in with him - Dee I don't think you realised Ryan's bag was made for just one?<br /><br /> Puddles were now forming fast all around us as the rain continued to fall and one thing you notice when&#160;sleeping rough is how noisy it is! Bags rustling, people talking, singing and laughing, snoring, cars passing at a distance, everything just seemed even more noisy. Why is that?<br /> &#160;<br /><strong>5am</strong><br /><br /> The rain was now pounding our position and if we had been in the trenches fighting, we'd have evacuated our post by then, and as expected, that's when there were rumblings of discontent in the Noses camp! Dee still needed the bathroom and now really needed to go! After whining for a few more minutes, Dee raised herself off the groundsheet &#8211; rain sodden and headed off. I turned to put my umbrella up, to see Claire now laying off the groundsheet and on the flooded grass- with her head and hat (Steve Tierney's) in a large puddle of water. I thought, <strong>wow she might actually drown</strong>, but then I thought "tough, I&#8217;m too cozy in my own bag &#8211; well as cozy as I could be."</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple Byte Night - Nick's Not Moving!" src="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Nicks not moving.jpg" width="405" height="246" /> <div>Nick's not moving!</div> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>You'll be happy to hear <strong>she didn't drown</strong>, she did in fact give us all a fit of giggles and as we all realised that the groundsheet was now flooded, we couldn't stop giggling - tiredness maybe? We were all getting wetter the more the rain fell and nothing was going to stop it. Everything was now funny and it didn't even matter when we eventually found Dee's mobile phone laying some way away from us and soaking - that seemed funny as well.<br /> &#160;<br /><strong>Now it became a battle of the strongest, or daftest, to see who'd stay the course and be the&#160;last man or woman standing!</strong><br /> &#160;<br /><strong>5:30 am</strong><br /><br /> Now 5:30am.......first off the sheet was Dee, bathroom bound and then Ryan followed, looking shattered. Claire after nearly drowning decided enough was enough. "I'm cold" she exclaimed....as she tried to release herself from her survival bag and 3 times falling backwards in to the puddles. Eventually she managed to drag herself and her gear off towards the marquee in the distance to try and warm up.</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple Byte Night - Sanctuary!" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Sanctuary.jpg" width="405" height="246" /> <div>Sanctuary from the rain at 5am in Edinburgh</div> </div> <div> <br /> So it was down to Mike and me, but Mike soon gave up and after a lame excuse about needing the bathroom, it was the old man of the team left laying in his bag and starting to feel soaked? That was because as soon as everyone got up the puddles on the ground sheet started to relocate and I found that now my shoulders were in the water - my jacket was fast becoming a sponge! While still trying to tough it out, I got a visit from Claire, who asked me, <strong>"why aren't we going home?&#8221;</strong><br /><br /> I lifted my head, rain still falling and looked around the field, people were now getting up and moving about, so it was my turn to vacate the premises. I got out of my bag and stepped in to my Merrills, only to find I was now standing in a giant puddle - feet now wet through................. And it was&#160;still raining.<br /><br /> We packed up, the team had a coffee and a bun and we said our goodbyes. I had of course heard about it, but really knew nothing about the disease and why should I, it had never&#160;impacted my family and, as they say, "out of sight, is out of mind!" <br /><br /> That charity was called The 65 Roses and now I&#8217;m now hooked on helping this magnificent cause and those that suffer from Cystic Fibrosis, so once again I set off to raise some money. Yes I know it&#8217;s at a time when the world is in economic crisis and everyone is watching the pennies, but if I didn&#8217;t ask &#8211; I wouldn&#8217;t get.<br /> &#160;<br /><a href="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk"><strong style="color: #800080">Bright Purple</strong></a> clients and friends of our company are the best, so supportive of our exploits to help others less fortunate than ours. Without constant daily treatment, which in itself can be an awful experience for the sufferer, your lungs can drown with the fluid build-up. 8000 people suffer from CF in the UK, it might not sound a lot, but its 8000 too many in our opinion. <br /><br /></td> <td> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple - Nick Awaiting His Turn To Abseil The Forth Rail Bridge" src="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Waiting for my turn bp.jpg" width="123" height="200" /> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </div> <div>Over 2 million people in the UK carry the faulty gene that causes CF &#8211; that&#8217;s around 1 in 25 of our population! Each week, 5 babies are born with CF and each week, 3 young lives are lost to CF. Around only half of the Cystic Fibrosis population can expect to live to over 35 years, although improvements in treatments mean a baby born today could expect to live even longer.</div> <div> <br /> Therefore, on September 13th 2009, I abseiled 165 feet off one of Scotland's most famous structures - the Forth Rail Bridge. Did you know it is Scotland&#8217;s biggest listed building - I didn&#8217;t? They began building it in 1883 and finished it in 1890, an architectural masterpiece that maybe those of us living in and around Edinburgh and Fife&#160;take for granted these days.<br /> &#160;<br /> So did I look forward to stepping over the edge in to the abyss &#8211; aye right! "Not at all", is the serious answer and&#160;if I am being honest, the thought of just a wee rope and a helmet being my only safety mechanism (not even a safety net to catch me) didn&#8217;t fill me with glee. But hey it was all for a fantastic cause which you have read all about above, so nothing was going to stop me! I had support from friends and family, but just as importantly from people like June Ross, a regional fund raising manager for Cystic Fibrosis who works tirelessly for the charity - these people&#160;are the real hero's, who have to fight every day to raise another pound.</div> <p>Many of my team here at&#160;<a href="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk"><strong style="color: #800080">Bright Purple Resourcing</strong></a> are involved in various charity events to raise money for some excellent causes.&#160;Some have grown beard's for breast cancer, others have run 10k's and in October 09 our team will take part in <a href="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/InTheCommunity/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Never Mind Byte Night What About Biting Cold Night 28"><strong>Byte Night 09</strong></a>. Nick said &#8220;as a business we are trying to look at our corporate and social responsibilities and there&#8217;s a lot to do, but kid&#8217;s and sport are something we feel strongly about. Therefore putting sponsorship into a local football side was a good option for us, and it helps that many of us are football fans ourselves.&#8221;<br /><br /> Nick goes on, &#8220;<a href="http://www.spartansfc.com/"><strong>Spartans</strong></a> are one of Scotland&#8217;s most famous amateur sides and have a very long history of bringing both young boy&#8217;s and girl&#8217;s through their academy systems and working closely with the local community. In December 2008 the Spartans opened their new community football academy, and in the summer of 2009 the senior team moved to a brand new stadium at Ainslie Park.<br /><br /> The local kids that live in the vicinity of the academy get free access to play football during certain times of the day, which keeps them off the street and gives them a sense of belonging, which in turn helps Spartans to build their brand.<br /><br /><div align="center"><img alt="Bright Purple - Sponsors of Spartans FC under 15's" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Spartans1.JPG" height="296" width="405" /></div><br /><br /></font>Head Coach of Spartans FC Under 15&#8217;s is Ali Mitchell, a dedicated man and who is SFA qualified to train children &amp; youth level. Ali had been coaching with Spartans since 2001 and gives up a lot of his personal time to carry out training sessions and of course take his team for games on a Sunday afternoon. He started his involvement, like many others, with his own son playing for Spartans and through time he got involved in training sessions and from there, he was hooked! Last season Ali led this same Spartans side to 4 cup semi finals and a respectable Top 5 finish in their first year in Division 1.<br /><br /> Nick has been impressed by Ali&#8217;s methods for working with his team and quoted, &#8221;Ali earns respect of his team by making decisions, and not always easy decisions. He gets the job done and is focused on getting results. When results don&#8217;t go his way, Ali is professional in delivery of the message back to his team and he works with them to look at weaknesses, as well as strengths. I see a lot of qualities in him that are required in my daily business life, so supporting his team wasn&#8217;t a difficult decision. He is totally dedicated to the kids and gives freely of his time week in and week out, while he continues to run his own successful business. Where would kids be without the likes of Ali and the many other people around the country who stand at the side of pitches watching youngsters playing football, in rain, hail or shine?&#8221;<font face="Arial" color="#000000"><br /><br /> The squad that Bright Purple are supporting is &#8211;<br /> 1.&#160;Keiran (cat) Davidson <br /> 2.&#160;Gregg Veitch<br /> 3.&#160;Gordon Aitken<br /> 4.&#160;Rharidh Smith<br /> 5.&#160;Scott Docherty<br /> 6.&#160;Dylan Rintoul<br /> 7.&#160;Scott Murchie<br /> 8.&#160;Jesper Price<br /> 9.&#160;Callum Mein<br /> 10.&#160;Robbie Shepherdson<br /> 11.&#160;Thomas Docherty<br /> 12.&#160;Bradley Laing<br /> 13.&#160;Elliot Mitchell<br /> 14.&#160;Lloyd McGhee<br /> 15.&#160;Ross Wilcox<br /> 16.&#160;Sean Davidson<br /> 17.&#160;Stuart Wilcox<br /> 18.&#160;Ben Black</font></div> <p> <font face="Arial" color="#000000">Bright Purple wishes the boys all the best for the season ahead and we&#8217;ll be bringing you up to speed on progress throughout. After a rollercoaster ride of crunching tackles and spectacular goals, the team made it to the final for a nail biting finale... <div> <br /> After a hard-fought match, at the San Siro (unfortunately not Milan&#8217;s famous stadium, but a 5-a-side replica at Edinburgh Corn Exchange&#8217;s World of Football), <strong>ScottishPower</strong> secured a 3 - 1 victory over tournament outsiders <strong>Bright Purple Resourcing</strong> (BPR) to win the <strong>2009 ScotlandIS 5-a-side football tournament</strong>. Having fallen behind to an early BPR goal, ScottishPower wrapped up the trophy with two late goals after a very close match.<br /><br /></div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple 5-aside team" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/BrightPurple-team.png" width="400" height="239" /> </div> <div> <br /> <br /> On a very cold Friday in May, ten teams arrived in Edinburgh for the highlight of the football season. These ten teams were split into two groups of five in a 'round robin' format, in pursuit of one prize - the ScotlandIS 5-a-side trophy.<br /><br /><strong>Group Stages</strong><br /><br /><strong>Group A</strong>, nicknamed the <em>&#8216;group of death&#8217;</em> as it contained both of last years finalists, consisted of holders 9-20 Recruitment, Praxa, Conscia, Head Resourcing and RBS, last years beaten finalists, out for revenge. The group was eventually won by Head Resourcing, who beat 9-20 into second place. Conscia - who were in need of a plumber due to their leaky defence - picked up the tournament wooden spoon, failing to pick up a point. There was consternation as one of the tournament favourites RBS, unable to recapture their form of last year, were eliminated at the group stage. Praxa were also eliminated at this stage picking up their only points with a 5-0 victory over Conscia.</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> <table border="0" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2" width="405"> <tbody> <tr style="color: #ffffff" bgcolor="#800080"> <td style="color: #ffffff; font-size: 10pt"> <strong>Team</strong> </td> <td> <strong> <span style="font-size: 10pt"> <span style="color: #ffffff"> <strong style="color: #ffffff">Won</strong> </span> </span> </strong> </td> <td> <strong style="color: #ffffff"> <span style="color: #ffffff; font-size: 10pt">Drawn</span> </strong> </td> <td> <strong> <span style="font-size: 10pt"> <span style="color: #ffffff"> <strong style="color: #ffffff">Lost</strong> </span> </span> </strong> </td> <td> <strong style="color: #ffffff"> <span style="color: #ffffff; font-size: 10pt">For</span> </strong> </td> <td style="color: #ffffff"> <strong> <span style="color: #ffffff; font-size: 10pt">Against</span> </strong> </td> <td style="width: 38px; color: #ffffff"> <span style="font-size: 10pt"> <strong style="color: #ffffff">GD</strong> </span> </td> <td style="width: 48px; height: 26px"> <strong> <span style="color: #ffffff"> <span style="color: #ffffff; font-size: 10pt">Points</span> </span> </strong> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="width: 79px; height: 24px"> <span style="font-size: 10pt">Head</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">3</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">1</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">0</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">13</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">6</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">7</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">10</span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">9-20</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">2</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">2</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">0</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">13</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">8</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">5</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">8</span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">RBS</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">2</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">1</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">1</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">12</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">4</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">8</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">7</span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">Praxa</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">1</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">0</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">3</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">8</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">10</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">-2</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">3</span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">Conscia</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">0</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">0</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">4</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">7</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">24</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">-17</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">0</span> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>In <strong>Group B</strong>, the first of the semi-final spots went to ScottishPower who had brought an army of substitutes as part of their ongoing energy efficiency drive.
