Electronics Reliability Engineer - Aberdeen
Miles below the surface, there’s no engineer on hand to swap out a failed capacitor. Electronics sent downhole have to survive years of searing temperatures and crushing pressure with no chance of repair, so every op-amp, transistor and passive on the board has to earn its place.
Our client is a market leader in wireless downhole systems, using cable-free telemetry to bring critical well data to the surface. With headquarters in Aberdeen and a presence across the Middle East, the US and beyond, their technology relies on getting the smallest details right.
They’re now looking for an Electronics Reliability Engineer to join their Electronics R&D team. This role sits at component and circuit-board level, not system or asset reliability. It suits an engineer who is happier proving one part will last than designing the next complex circuit, and who wants to know exactly how and why components fail.
What’s In It For You:
Our client backs their people with real development, support for further education and genuine flexibility, all within a supportive, close-knit team that is part of a global business.
-
Aberdeen - flexible working, with regular on-site lab time
-
Salary range of £40,000 - £60,000
-
33 days holiday + long service awards
-
Private healthcare
-
Life insurance
-
Company pension
-
Support for further education
-
Cycle to work & EV lease scheme
What You’ll Be Doing:
-
Evaluating electronic components for high-temperature, high-reliability downhole use
-
Designing qualification programmes, from sample sizes and stress tests to timescales and characterisation
-
Running and overseeing accelerated, life and high-temperature testing, then deciding whether parts are fit for purpose
-
Staying ahead of obsolescence and lead-time risks by sourcing and qualifying alternatives before supply problems hit
-
Getting to the root cause of component and PCB failures and recommending design, part or process changes
-
Working with production and external suppliers to strengthen PCB assembly reliability
-
Producing clear qualification and failure reports, and keeping test data organised for future use
What You’ll Bring:
-
A degree in Electronic Engineering or a closely related field
-
Hands-on electronic design experience at component and circuit level
-
A background in a high-reliability sector such as aerospace, defence, space, medical, nuclear, rail or downhole oil and gas
-
A solid grasp of how components are built, how they behave under stress and how they fail
-
Experience of component selection, derating or qualification
-
Confidence analysing test data and writing structured technical reports
-
Bonus points for high-temperature electronics (150°C+), HALT/HASS or Weibull analysis, AEC-Q or MIL standards, failure analysis techniques, or obsolescence management
-
Flexibility to travel occasionally to suppliers and test houses
If you’re a patient, curious engineer who wants to make sure electronics go the distance, please apply with your most up-to-date CV.
