We're fundraising! Bright Purple take on the Edinburgh 7 Hills Challenge in aid of Cyrenians.

From the team that brought you multiple charity bake sales and the Edinburgh Team Relay, we are thrilled to announce our latest charity fundraising challenge, the Bright Purple 7 Hills Challenge!

On 23rd July we will be donning our Purple attire and setting off on an epic 14.5 mile journey around Edinburgh, scaling its 7 main hills with an ascent of over 2,200ft, all in aid of local charity Cyrenians. Very excitingly, we even have a match-funding partner to double your donation! Read on to find out who!

Cyrenians - tackling the causes and consequences of homelessness

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the work of Cyrenians has become more urgent than ever:

"When lockdown came into effect, we had to react quickly to ensure that those rough sleeping had somewhere they could safely isolate, families had access to food, out elderly clients had social connection and someone to explain the changing quarantine rules. Speed was of the essence and the number of people relying on us skyrocketed." (Cyrenians Impact Report 2020)

Statistics from the Cyrenians Covid-19 response:
  • In the last year, the Cyrenians FareShare Depot down in Leith has more than tripled their output, delivering 4.2million meals worth of surplus food to the local community
  • The Cyrenians cook school was repuposed as a food production kitchen to cook and deliver over 100,000 ready meals
  • They have supported over 100 rough sleepers into hotel accommodation during the first lockdown, and have since supported over 70% of those individuals into settled accommodation
  • Supported over 300 elderly people every week with phone calls, virtual singing groups, garden visits, exercise groups, food and medication delivery and more

How can I support Bright Purple's 7 Hill Challenge for Cyrenians?

We'd love if you could Donate to our Just Giving Pageany donation would be greatly appreciated, but here's a little breakdown of what different donation amounts can do for the Cyrenians (and remember Zonal will match your donation!).

  • £5: Will provide a local household a recipe bag and ingredients to cook a healthy, balanced meal.
  • £7 (a pound a hill!): Could provide one person in the community with enough food for 5 meals so they can eat well and stay healthy, as part of Cyrenians Food that Goes Further campaign.
  • £10: Could pay for an emergency food parcel to be delivered to someone in temporary accommodation.
  • £25: Could pay for an hour's support and coffee with a member of Cyrenian's outreach team.

Are you a business looking to donate a little more? Here are some slightly higher donation brackets and how they could help Cyrenians:

  • £50: Could give 10 local households a recipe bag and ingredients to cook a healthy, balance meal.
  • £100: Could deliver over 15 tonnes of surplus food to local community groups.
  • £200: Could give 3 of Cyrenian's Cook School trainees REHIS accreditation, providing professional opportunities.

What other ways can I support the Cyrenians?

Fundraising co-ordinator Sophie Bell said:

"There's a lot of work to do right now, with more and more people needing our support. That's why we need as many people as possible to find out a bit more about what we do, and why. A great and easy way to get involved is to spread the word! Sign up to our mailing list, follow us on social media, engage with our posts - every little action you take helps us to go that bit further.

Another way to support Cyrenians is by volunteering, and there's a huge variety of options to choose from. From residential roles, to volunteer drivers, gardeners to admin support, 587 individuals generously gave over 67,000 hours of their time to shape our work.

We can't do it alone, will you join us?"
